I built my first guitar in 1997 by reading "Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology" by Jonthan Natelson and William Cumpiano and following the step-by-step instructions in that book. I was only able to do this because of my strong woodworking background. I have since read many other books and articles on guitarmaking, and have had the assistance of a number of other luthiers who have been extremely generous with their time and advice. I don't strictly follow all of Cumpiano's methods anymore, but I always have the book open on my bench to consult when necessary.
I build each guitar by hand and generally only work on one or two at a time. I usually build two or three guitars each year and I accept commissions. Contact me at DredfogGuitars@gmail.com to discuss a guitar for you.
I don't keep track of time on each guitar, but I easily spend at least 200 hours per instrument, and sometimes more depending on the complexity of the decoration or how many mistakes I make. My goal is to not repeat the same mistake I have just made on the next guitar but to find a new mistake to make. I always succeed! (But they don't show.)
The slides below show the many steps involved in building a guitar. Hope you enjoy the show!
